Primers for Structural Steel, CGJM

Guide Information for Fire-resistance Ratings

USE

This category covers structural steel primers investigated for use in fire-resistance designs as detailed in Fire-resistance Ratings - ANSI/UL 263 (BXUV). These paint primers have been investigated in conjunction with spray-applied fire-resistive materials (SFRMs) for the protection of structural steel members as identified in the individual certifications. As noted in the individual designs, the use of metal lath or other mechanical fastening means is sometimes required when using SFRMs on larger structural steel members. These paint primers may eliminate the need for the mechanical fasteners.

These paint primers have been investigated for their ability to retain the SFRMs on larger structural steel sections when subjected to a standard fire-exposure test as defined in ANSI/UL 263, "Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials."

The surface of the structural steel member is intended to be prepared in accordance with the specifications provided with the paint primer. Application of the SFRM is intended to be in accordance with the specifications of the SFRM manufacturer.

The individual certifications identify the paint primer and limitations with respect to the dimensions of the structural steel and the manufacturer of the SFRM.
