Guide Information for Fire-resistance Ratings

803.9.1.2

GENERAL

This category covers both mineral fiber and metal-pan ceiling materials. The fiber material is composed of glass or mineral-wool fiber and binders, formed into tiles and lay-in panels. The perforated metal pans are of steel and support mineral-wool pads.

Acoustical materials may be manufactured in metric sizes to accommodate a metric-sized suspended-ceiling system. Manufacturers of metric-sized acoustical materials are indicated in the individual certifications.

Metric-sized acoustical materials should only be used with metric-sized framing members. Typical inch-pound-sized modules and equivalent metric-sized modules are:

REQUIREMENTS

The basic standard used to investigate products in this category is ANSI/UL 263, "Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials."

Where indicated in the individual certifications, acoustical materials have also been investigated to ANSI/ASTM E136 (2011), "Standard Test Method for Behavior of Materials in a Vertical Tube Furnace at 750°C."

UL MARK

The Certification Mark of UL on the carton is the only method provided by UL to identify products manufactured under its Certification and Follow-Up Service. The Certification Mark for these products includes the UL symbol, the words "CERTIFIED" and "SAFETY," the geographic identifier(s), and a file number.

Additional Certification Markings

Products covered under this category are additionally marked with the following information:

AS TO FIRE RESISTANCE
DESIGN NO(S). ____
SEE UL ONLINE CERTIFICATIONS DIRECTORY

or

AS TO FIRE RESISTANCE
SEE UL ONLINE CERTIFICATIONS DIRECTORY
Where indicated in the individual certifications, the following statement may be added to either of the markings shown above:

ALSO CERTIFIED TO ANSI/ASTM E136
STANDARD TEST METHOD FOR BEHAVIOR OF MATERIALS
IN A VERTICAL TUBE FURNACE AT 750°C

Alternate UL Mark

The Classification Mark of UL on the carton is the only method provided by UL to identify products manufactured under its Classification and Follow-Up Service. The Classification Mark for these products includes the UL symbol, the word "CLASSIFIED" above the UL symbol (as illustrated in the Introduction of this Directory), and the following additional information:

ACOUSTICAL MATERIAL
FIRE RESISTANCE CLASSIFICATION
DESIGN NO(S). ____
SEE UL FIRE RESISTANCE DIRECTORY
Issue No.

or
