Bearing Wall Rating - 1, 1-1/2 and 2 Hr (See Item 3)

This design was evaluated using a load design method other than the Limit States Design Method (e.g., Working Stress Design Method). For jurisdictions employing the Limit States Design Method, such as Canada, a load restriction factor shall be used — See Guide BXUV or BXUV7

    1. Floor and Ceiling Runners — (Not Shown) Channel shaped, fabricated from min 0.0329 in. thick (No. 20 gauge corrosion-protected steel, that provide a sound structural connection between steel studs and adjacent assemblies such as floor, ceiling and/or other walls. Attached to floor and ceiling assemblies with steel fasteners spaced not greater than 24 in. OC.
    2. Steel Studs — Corrosion protected steel studs, min 2-5/8 in. wide, min No. 20 MSG (0.0329 in. thick), cold formed, designed in accordance with the current editionn of the Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members by the American Iron and Steel Institute. The max stud spacing of wall assemblies shall not exceed 24 in. OC. Studs attached to floor and ceiling runners with 1/2 in. long Type S-12 pan head, self-drilling, self-tapping steel screws on both sides of the studs or by welded or bolted connections designed in accordance with AISI specifications.
    2A. Wood Studs — Nom 2 by 4 in. spaced 16 in. or 24 in. OC. Studs cross braced at mid-height and effectively firestopped at the top and bottom.
    3. Gypsum Board — Any 1/2 in. thick UL Classified Gypsum Board that is eligible for use in Design No. X515. Any 5/8 in. thick UL Classified Gypsum Board that is eligible for use in Design Nos. L501, G512 or U305. Gypsum panels with beveled, square or tapered edges, applied vertically. Vertical joints centered over studs and staggered one stud cavity on opposite sides of studs. Vertical joints in adjacent layers (multilayer systems) staggered one stud cavity. The thickness and number of layers for the 1, 1-1/2 and 2 hr ratings are as follows:

    4. Thin Bed Mortar — Applied to the joints of each panel.
    5. Precast Autoclaved Aerated Concrete* — Min 2 in. thick and max 2 ft wide panels fastened to the steel studs with 2 in. long Type S3 hex head type self-drilling, self-tapping screws Minimum 2 fasteners per panel at each stud spaced a maximum of 2 in. from the panel edge.

    6. Exterior Facings —
    6A. Aluminum Siding — Horizontal lap type 9 in. wide fabricated from 0.019 in. thick or 0.024 in. thick painted aluminum. Interior face of 0.019 in. thick siding lined with 3/8 in. thick unbonded insulation material. Attached to the studs with 1-7/8 in. long 0.118 in. diam steel screws spaced 9 in. OC along the studs. A starter strip to be fastened to floor runner with 0.118 in. diam screws spaced 12 in. OC.
    6B. Steel Siding — Same description as above (No. 17 GSG) gauge 0.017 in. thick.
    6C. Brick Veneer — Any type 4 in. wide brick. Metal ties used as every fourth course spaced 24 in. OC horizontally. Fastened to steel studs through gypsum sheathing with one No. 6-20 steel screw per tie. One inch air space provided between veneer and gypsum sheathing.
    6D. Stucco — Portland cement type-3/4 in. min thickness. Metal lath or mesh base attached to studs with No. 6-20 steel screws. "T-Nails," or staples approved by local building codes. Spaced 6 in. OC max and driven through gypsum sheathing.
    7. Fasteners — (Not Shown) — Screws used to attach Gypsum Board (Item 3) to steel studs (Item 2): self-tapping bugle head sheet steel type, spaced 12 in. O.C. First layer Type S-12 by 1 in. long. Second layer Type S-12 by 1-5/8 in. long. Third layer Type S-12 by 1-7/8 in. long. Nails used to attach Gypsum Board (Item 3) to wood studs (Item 2A): First layer 6d cement coated nails 1-7/8 in. long, 0.0915 in. shank diam, 15/64 in. diam heads spaced 6 in. OC. Second and Third layer 8d cement coated nails 2-3/8 in. long, 0.113 in. shank diam, 9/32 in. diam heads spaced 8 in. OC.
